I am Canadian and here on a trainee work visa (J-1). I married an American last week and would like to start my green card application as soon as possible. My current visa is good for another year but it would be best if there will be no gap between statuses where I cannot work.
Any advice on whether or not to use an immigration lawyer?
Are the kits from this site: http://www.usimmigrationsupport.org/ helpful?
Any common mistakes make when filing that I should be extra careful about?
I've also heard about applying for advance travel parole but read somewhere that I might not need it since I already have a J-1. Is there a limit to how many letters of good standing I can get during one J-1?

You don't need an attorney and you don't need any kit. Your case is very simple.
Your US citizen spouse files I-130, I-864 and G-325A with the USCIS.
You file I-485, I-131, I-765 and G-325A with the USCIS.
You file ALL the forms at the same time, in the SAME envelope. The total cost to file is $1,365 (the I-131 and I-765 are free when filed this way).
In about 90 days, or less, you'll get a work permit that will enable you to take any job.
In about 6 months you'll have your Green Card interview.
In about a year you'll get your first Green Card in the mail.
90 days before your Green Card expires (2 years) you'll file I-751 to remove the conditions and get your permanent Green Card.
DO NOT LEAVE THE USA until the advance parole is approved... about 90 to 120 days.
You can find all the forms here......

if u came here like an au pair, J1 , make sure u do not have a 2 year home residency requirement, u find that info on your I-94.
if u have that requirement u need to go back for 2 years in y home country, if u do not have that req, you are good to file your papers.
visit www.visajourney.com it is very helpful.
good luck.
