Broken marriage, please advice?

Recently i got engaged and i didnt feel comfortable with that girl; hence i cancelled the marriage. Girl is very arrogant and rude

Now girl father is sending mail to me stating, that i have to repay the full engagement expenses, failing which he will take legal action. please advice what should i doBroken marriage, please advice?
Actually, written documentation is not required. Verbal contracts apply too, and usually an engagement is considered a legal, verbal agreement to marry.

If he really wants to push it, this could go to court. I've heard of court rulings both ways. I can't see any judge that would rule that you should bear the entire cost of the cancelled wedding... but one might find that you should pay half.

How much is he saying that you should pay? If it's less than around $5000, that's a small claims case which does not require legal counsel. Otherwise, you need to weigh your options here, will it be cheaper to just pay instead of getting a lawyer?

It really depends on the family and the amount of money they've put down in non-refundable deposits for the wedding so far. Knowing her family, do you think they're bluffing?

Oh, and did you get the engagement ring back?Broken marriage, please advice?
I am really sorry about the broken engagement. I have had friends who have gone through this and know it is hard, whether you are the one to call it off or not.

Legally, I am not going to advise you on what to do because I don't really know. Morally, I think that you should at least bare some of the cost. It is the right thing to do if you are the one who called the wedding off and if there was a lot of deposit money that had been lost.
if you didnt sign any written agreement you dont have to pay anything

thats the legal part

now theres the moral part too

edit - verbal agreement actually won't hold up in court as its considered hearsay
What exactly are the engagement expenses that hes talking about?
